Stop Doing, Start Being
Chances are, if you are like 90% of workers globally, you are addicted to action. Reacting to outside triggers that eat away at your ability to stay focused. Constantly keeping busy, with never a moment of rest, jumping from one task to the other, from one meeting to another, from one activity to another.
Each task we work on, even if unimportant, creates a short dopamine kick that briefly elevates our mood and keeps us hooked for more. In fact, email is considered by some the #1 killer of productivity if not managed intentionally (well, perhaps #2 if you count inefficient meetings!)
However, keeping busy does not always mean being productive or effective. Doing does not always translate to making an impact. In fact, if we're not aware, we end up being exhausted but not impactful.
Ask yourself:
- How often do you invest time in doing...nothing?
- Do you find it hard to switch off, even when on vacation?
- Do you secretly feel guilty or like you're wasting your time if you're not busy with something?
